Finding Cases on a Federal Tax Topic in Westlaw Campus Research

For tax cases, select Practice Areas and then Tax. Enter the parties of the case, if known, or search for cases with keywords. To use West Key Number System, go to Tools, select West Key Numbers and select Key Number 371 Taxation, and scroll through and select specific tax topics to retrieve related cases.

Finding Federal Tax Cases in Nexis-Uni

For known cases, select Cases and enter the parties' names. For tax related cases, on the Nexis Uni menu, select All Sources. Under Practice Areas & Topics, scroll down and select Tax Law and enter search.

Is The Case Still Valid?

Attorneys use two citation tools to determine the validity of a case: Shepard's on Nexis-Uni and KeyCite on Westlaw. Warning: currency and scope are limited on the academic versions of these services. They should not be used outside the teaching environment.

Retrieving a Shepard's^® report by citation can be done by entering the citation name in the case search box, then click the Shepard's Signal™ indicator next to the document name.

Keycite information automatically appears to the left of a retrieved case.
