Regulatory Agency Filings and Info

A-Z Index of U.S. Government Departments and Agencies

Many industries are state or federally regulated. Companies in those industries must disclose information about themselves to those agencies.

In addition to disclosing financial information not necessarily found elsewhere, the information is often expressed using specific industry terminology and metrics.

Some agencies do not disclose the actual information or reports on their website;.the reports must be requested.

Federal Reserve National Information Center
A central source of information on bank holding companies, branches (including US branches of foreign banks) and bank rankings.
Federal Reserve Board
Quarterly listing of larger banks, their assets, # of branches and foreign/domestic ownership.
Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council - Bank Information Center
Bank filings and bank related information from the various regulatory bank agencies, including the FDIC, the OCC and the Federal Reserve.
FDIC Call Reports/Thrift Financial Reports
A centralized portal for finding financial information on FDIC banking institutions (holding companies and branches). Peer-group information is also available here.
Office of the Comptroller of the Currency – Various Reports
Find OCC reports that mention financial institutions or where the OCC has taken action regarding a particular institution.

Broadcast and Cable Operators

Federal Communications Commission: Media Bureau
Merger reports, history, ownership, consumer complaints.

Energy and Utility Companies

Key agencies are the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Note that some FERC reports aren't online and must be requested.

FERC Online: Documents and Filing
Searchable database providing filings and reports submitted to FERC by energy and utility companies. Filings contain project proposals (e.g., pipeline construction) as well as actions taken against an energy company.
FERC: Electronic Quarterly Reports
Filings with pricing, sales and other financial information reported on a quarterly basis. Some reports may be downloaded and are in a zipfile; others will be emailed (also in a zipfile).
DOE: Natural Gas Company Financials
Downloadable spreadsheets with sales and volume for natural gas companies.
