Citing as you write with Microsoft Word:

Open a new blank Microsoft Word document..

Note that when we downloaded Zotero it created a new file menu item in Microsoft Word at the top of the screen called Zotero.

undefined

When you select this Zotero menu item, some buttons will appear in a small menu to the left that look like this:

Start writing something in the document:

undefined

Add an in-text citation by putting your cursor where you would like it to appear, and then clicking on the Add/Edit Citation button on the Zotero Microsoft Word window at the top of the screen:

undefined

When you do, Zotero will open up a red search bar in your Word document that looks like this:

undefined

Enter in keywords to search your Zotero library for the source you want to cite and Zotero will offer suggestions:

undefined

Select the item you want, and Zotero will generate an in-text citation for it in the search box:

undefined

If you click directly on the in-text citation it will open a window where you can enter in page number details:

Enter this information if needed and click the enter button. The in-text citation will appear in your document next to your words.

Cats are great (Adriana Gyӧrke et al., 2020, p. 123).

Continue doing this as you write:

Cats are great (Adriana Gyӧrke et al., 2020, p. 123). Some say cats are wonderful (Hischak, 2008; Kitchener, 2012). Other say they are cute (Pratsch et al., 2018).

When you are ready to generate a bibliography from the in-text citations you have made:

First place your cursor in the place in your document where you would like the bibliography to begin. Next, click on the Add/Edit Bibliography button on the Zotero menu.

A window will open asking you to select the citation style. Choose one and then click OK:

  • undefined

Zotero will generate an alphabetized bibliography in the style of your choice:

undefined

Be sure to check your bibliography for errors. If you want to correct any errors you may find in any the citations, don’t correct them in your Word document.

Instead, make the corrections inside of your Zotero library by selecting the items that need to be adjusted and make the correction on the right side of the Zotero window.

After fixing it, just click on the refresh button in Microsoft Word, and the correction will show up:
