APA General Format

Title Page

Always Includes:

  • Title of paper
  • First & last name
  • Author affiliation (eg.- Baruch College, Communications Department)
  • Course number and name for which the paper is being submitted (Eg.- COM 3069)

Optional:

  • Professor name
  • Due date

If you are unsure: always double check what your professor requires on the title page!

Abstract

  • Should contain at least your research topic, research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions
  • Should be a single paragraph, double-spaced. Abstracts are typically between 150- 250 words.
  • May contain "Keywords: (italicized), and then list your keywords". Listing your keywords will help researchers find your work in databases.
  • It is not always required of student papers, so always check with your professor.

Main Paper

Contains the following:

  • Introduction: Includes a thesis statement! The introduction also allows you to briefly introduce and state the issue to be examined, as well as how you examine these issues.
  • Body: The main bulk of your paper. In-text citations should be used throughout this section of your paper.
  • Conclusion: This section is meant to bring cohesion to your paper by clearly reiterating your main points. Make sure to summarize your themes and sub-points.

References

  • Always the last page of your paper
  • Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text.
  • All text should be double spaced, just like the rest of your essay.

Style Guidelines

Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), with 1" margins on all sides. Papers are generally (and for the purpose of this course) written in 12 point font using Times New Roman.

Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. Your page header/running head should have page numbers flush right. The "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER"  header should be flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation.

Remember that when in doubt, reference the APA style guide!
