Anti-slavery sentiment dates to the colonial period in America, but it was not until 1833 that the American Anti-Slavery Society was founded. Other abolitionist societies followed, producing brochures, newspapers and other ephemera which alerted the country to their cause. The movement gained additional momentum with the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
