Labs and Software

Baruch Labs
Baruch has a number of computer labs on campus - over 300 machines in the BCTC lab, over 60 in the library, and smaller labs scattered across campus. Most machines have Office, SAS, SPSS, and ArcGIS. Access limited to Baruch students, faculty, and staff.
Grad Center Labs
Computer labs in the Grad Center are located in the library and throughout individual departments. Many machines have Office, SAS, SPSS, Maple, R, and ArcGIS. The Grad Center offers remote access to software via CITRIX and special parallel computer clusters locally for computationally intensive research.

Open Source Software

Free, open source, cross-platform software for demographic analysis.

An Applied Demography Toolbox
A collection of applied demography programs, scripts, spreadsheets and databases.
R Project for Statistical Computing
A programming language and software package for statistics.
Geoda
Spatial statistics software package.
QGIS
A geographic information system. Can also be coupled with the more powerful GRASS.

Baruch affiliates can access this resource on or off campus. Other CUNY affiliates can only access this resource at Baruch's library.

Research Centers at Baruch

CUNY Institute for Demographic Research
CIDR was established to launch NYC’s first demographic research and training program. Headquartered at Baruch, faculty members from several CUNY campuses are affiliated with it. CIDR offers a certificate program in demography at the CUNY Grad Center and hosts seminars throughout the year.
New York Census Research Data Center
The NYCRDC is housed at Baruch and Cornell and provides academic researchers with on-site access to confidential microdata from the US Census.

Geographic Information Systems Practicum

GIS consists of software and data used for geographical analysis and map making. It can be applied to any discipline.

Introduction to GIS using Open Source Software was a day-long workshop offered each semester for CUNY affiliates. While it is not currently being offered, the materials are still updated and available for self-directed study. Visit the GIS practicum page to learn more.
