Factiva: How to Search

Step-by-Step - How to Use the Free Text Search Box

Use the "Free Text Search" box.

Factiva home page
Enter your company name and keywords.

AND

Use “and” to connect two or more concepts.

Search Tesla and earnings

OR

Use synonyms.

Connect synonyms with “or” and enclose them in parentheses.

Search with synonyms

Select a data range (the default of "last three months" may not go back far enough for you.)
Scroll down for "More Options" if you want to search for your terms in the full article or just in the headlines and lead paragraphs.

Select date and fulltext

N#

Use N# to search for phrases. For instance, N5 allows the system to search for 2 terms within 5 words of each other. The order of the 2 words doesn't matter.

example:

tesla and market n5 share

This retrieves articles with the phrase:

  • market share
  • share of the market
  • share of the automotive market
  • share of the electric vehicle market

When you open an article from the results list you can find Related Articles.

More Free Text Tips

There are several other ways to create a more precise search. Below are 2 examples:

hlp=

Restricting your term to the headline (title) or lead paragraph often ensures article are about your term rather than just mentioning it within the article.

EXAMPLE:

In the free text search box, type:

hlp=tesla

atleast#

Using atleast# (where you specify the number) ensures that each article mentions your term at least # times. Remember that the higher the number you chose, the fewer articles you will retrieve.

EXAMPLE:

hlp=tesla and atleast3 battery

In the search above, we are looking for articles with "tesla" in the headline or lead paragraph where the article mentions "battery" at least 3 times.
