Sociology Encyclopedias

Starting Your Sociology Research

Sociology employs diverse research  methods and  information formats, including: text, data, visual and audio resources. Look at the Data and Audiovisual Media page for diverse resources available to CUNY SPS sociology students. (Adapted from Wikipedia).

Encyclopedias can be a good way to start your research. Encyclopedia entries can include:

  • a historical context of your topic
  • names of key researchers in the field
  • explanations of theories and key concepts
  • chronologies/timelines
  • lists of articles and books about a topic

TIP: When you are ready to search library databases for articles or books, try using some of the key terms from the encyclopedia entry discussing your topic.

Manage & Organize Your Research

Use this Research Worksheet to keep track of library databases, keywords/search terms, authors, and other sources used during the research process.

Glossaries

Glossaries helpfully compile definitions of key terms, jargon, or acronyms commonly used within a field.
