How to Search for Books

 

 

Any Kind of Book (fiction or non-fiction)

  • Search by title of the book or author's name in reverse order (Dickens Charles instead of Charles Dickens)

Plays

  • Search for name of the play or the author's name in reverse order (Shakespeare William instead of William Shakespeare)

Poems

  • Finding a specific poem
    • Look for the poem in a book of poetry where all the poems are by that one poet
      • Search the library catalog for the poet's name (HINT: type the last name first, as in Dickinson Emily or Shakespeare William)
    • Look for the poem in a poetry anthology or collection where poems by lots of different authors are in one book.;
      • Look up the poem in Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry (2nd floor, call number PN1022 .G7) to see what poetry anthology or collection may include the poem, then search the library catalog to see if we own that book.
  • Finding a book of poems by a specific author
    • Search by the poet's name (HINT: type the last name first, as in Dickinson Emily or Shakespeare William)

Short Stories

  • Look for the story in a book where all the stories are by one author
    • Search the library catalog for the author's name (HINT: type the last name first, as in Hemingway Ernest)
  • Look for the story in a short story anthology or collection where stories by lots of different authors are in one book.;
    • Look up the story in Short Story Index (2nd floor, reference collection, call number) to see what anthology or collection may include the story, then search the library catalog to see if we own that book.
