Prelude to War Overview

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark that triggered the start of World War I, but the origins of the war go back to the 19th century. The growth of nationalism, the rivalry for wealth, power and prestige, and the economic and military rivalry among the European powers, all contributed to a hostile climate.
